Travel diary of a trip to Italy, 1826-1827.

Holograph journal of a three-month tour through Italy. The writer describes his impressions of museums, palaces, ruins, and especially churches in Rome, Naples, Siena, Florence, Pisa, and Genoa. Many diary entries begin with the names of churches the author has visited, in which he describes their services, architectural layout, and their holdings of artworks. On December 25th, for example, he describes the statues by Michaelangelo in the Church of St. Crece and the "splendid mausoleums" in the grand chapel of the Medici family. On January 7th, he attends a military mass at the Annonciade and then "went afterwards to the Cathedral Service...Heard an Italian Sermon in a fine Church with marble columns & paintings." The author also discusses traveling conditions and social activities throughout the diary. On January 5th, on his way to Genoa, he describes crossing on foot "over a narrow wooden bridge for foot passengers" while his carriage and horses remain "stuck in the middle of the waters." On December 18th, he visits the collection of Mr. Paeletti and buys pastes and shell brooches from him. At the end of the manuscript, he describes his journey home through France, mentioning the wintry weather, playing card and billiard games, and describing his fellow passengers.
